Así soy yo a fin de año/ This is me at the end of this year

For those of you who do not know me, here is a cartoon of myself, done at a recent party (notice the clever scarf hidding my scar). For those of you who do know me in person... what do you think?

Endpaper mitts

Oi, oi, the things I have to do to keep you people entertained! Such as, for example, trying to photograph "the one" endpaper mitt I've knit (it should look like these), the ones I started at the hospital.

Out of all the shoots I took, this is the only one resembling reality. I tried to take some arsty pictures of my own posing hand, but sadly enough, it looked rather "dead"... so here you have instead a sneak peak at what the mitts will look like when finished.

LOL
I think a New Year goal for me will be to learn how to take nicer pics of my work. Though look at the bright side, my pictures today, well, you can't say I'm fooling anyone as to my knitting abilities, LOL:

Tejiendo en Navidad / Christmas knitting

¡Feliz Navidad! ¿Qué estoy haciendo esta mañana? Tejiendo un Muir (shawl).
Merry Christmas! What am I doing this morning? Knitting a Muir shawl:

Así está por ahora. Así debería verse cuando esté terminado. (Más o menos, pienso hacerlo mucho más pequeño):
This is how it looks now. And this is how it's supposed to look in the end (kind of, I'm planning a shorter version)

Esta foto es un detalle del punto. Todo antes de estirarlo, por supuesto!
This other pictures is a close up. Pre-blocking, of course.

And this last one, showing so little detail, is just here because it shows the true color and shine of the whole thing. Will I ever be able to capture true color and shape in the same shot?

I'm using a hand made silk I got from Milana. This is it's "out of the cone" texture. No big deal. But after web blocking... heavenly texture.

Now, you don't sit around expecting it to see it finished soon, right?

And what are you all doing today, on Christmas? (For all the trouble I had getting to the Internet, I guess you are all online...)

Tratamientos / Treatment

I just want to warn you that this post relates to the illnes I'm going through, so if you are not interested, or maybe it unsettles you somehow, please stop reading here and we'll meet again in next post, ok?

I wanted to tell you that on January 9 I'll become the radioactive woman, the new Buenos Aires Hero woman (what's that, "heroine"?). That is to say, I'll get my ablative dosis of I131 (radioactive iodine) and then I'll have to stay in isolation for a whole week, rather like a nun.

I'll be on a very restrictive diet for two months before that, I can only eat meat or chicken, fruit and some vegetables. What an austere Year End it's going to be!

And a week after the iodine thing, I'll have to go through a full body scan to detect where the remaining malignant cells are located. I've already been warned that in this first scan, there always are some cells remaining in the place where the thyroid used to be, so I should panick.

So therefore... let's bet: a week home alone (not even my doggiefriend Pancha can stay with me), shall I get into a knitterly frenzy or shall I not even think of it? Will I manage to at least finish the endpaper mitts I started in the clinic?

Pssst. Me enojé.
Ahhh, something else I really wanted to tell you, since I find it so awful. At first, I thought this was somehow related to the silly young girls who get the phones at my health insurance. But then I discovered that even the best doctors, in their fancy offices, call this disease I have "thyroid ca". What? What does "ca" mean? What are we, 5 year olds? How is a person expected to face cancer when it can't even be named? How do you get healthy from something that doesn't even have a name. Shheesh, I'm pissed now.

¿Regalos tejidos? / Knitted gifts?

Reading as I am so many foreign blogs, I wonder if any of you people are knitting something to give away for Christmas. I realize that this being the southern hemisphere, heat and all, we are not going to gift away socks, hats, or scarves (or are we?). But, I don't know, maybe lace scarves, amigurimis, pot holders, something...

I confess I don't do it, not in your wildest dreams. This knitter has learn to inflict her knitting only onto those who appreciate it enough, and then again, only if they pleade for it to my entire satisfaction. On the contrary, no, never.

But actually, moved by some sudden strike of affection, a few days ago after my elderly aunt expressed her love for my summer lace sample shawl, I offered to knit something similar to her. Thank God she said no! I don't know what possessed me at the time that I offered such a thing!

So what do you do. Are any of you crazy enough to be knitting or crochetting Christmas gifts?

Agujas y algo más / Needles and an extra

As promised, the needles I got at the Fair. All of them DPN guatambuy wood. Three sets, Nº 4 and 40 cm long; Nº 6, 20 cm long, and Nº 3, 20 cm long.

Plus two different tapestry needles, which I insist in losing.

And, I'm sure you will wonder what are those magnific plates the needles are lying on... well, they are these:

My latest pottery thing. Made by these two hands from a ball of clay to the hand painting.

Today I visited this year handmade stuff fair. There were plenty of beautiful stuff, though I beelined for the fibery area.

Ejem. Vean foto.
I went with the idea of getting some dpns and a little, tiny, bit of wool, only if there was something I really enjoy. Well... see the pic below:

Let's say it was not exactly what I'd planned. I spent way over what I had set aside, but I still think I got good stuff at a good price.

Vamos por partes? Let's break it down:

The hank you see in the middle, just pushing to get out of the picture, is pure wool, two ply, hand woven and hand dyed in Catamarca (a northern province in my country). I love the color, how it varies within the hank.

Here it is held by me so you can see the weight, which is quite interesting (and we can also see I could use some photography lessons and some hand mosturizer, what are you gonna do!)

The first hank on the left, is natural llama, two ply, pretty thin. It's also hand woven. I bought it to knit a shawl some day.

Otra foto de escala / Another "see the weight" shot:

Casi comestible!
Finally, the rightmost hank, is also llama from Catamarca, two ply, hand woven. It's not dyed, but you can see how in some pictures there are two colores plied together, a chocolatey brown and cream. Yummy, good enough to eat.

And the needles, my friend, in a future post cause I have to go get myself something to eat!

Siguen los tejidos terminados / More finished stuff

This shiny and see through cardi was knit in the blink of an eye. The first time I knit ruffles, they came out alright, I think. For once, it's exactly what I wanted it to be. Eye catching piece of nothing to wear on summer evenings, in air conditioned places. It's weightless, sparkly, I'm sensing a bit hit. I'm going to wear it to my office year end party, with black pants a black camisole underneath the cardi.

The yarn is acrylic from Milana. Knit with 6 mm needles, wo it's quite open and has a beautiful drape to it.

Estoy muy contenta con este saquito! I'm very happy with this!

¿Algo tejido? / Some knitting?

Hola,

While I've been home getting better after surgery, I've been knitting a bit, and finishing up some UFOs.

Today I canfinally show you the summer lace sample I took several months to knit (and then some more to finish).

Me quedó enormemente largo.
It is a beast of a shawl. Blocking it was a bitch, I had to purchase three foam planks, 1x1 mt each and a gazillion pins. But it turned out wonderful, though I don't know when I'll wear it. Maybe I'll get some ideas when winter comes. Right now, just looking at it makes me sweat! I'm super proud of it, I was good at this!

Let's see how it wears next year. The yarn is merino legger from Milana, which was kind of sucky on other projects. I hope the shawl survives, it was so hard to knit it, it would be a pity to see it ruined.

And something else... I found the missing sleeve for Hey Teach. Now I'll have no more excuses to finish it!

Estoy en casa / I'm home

¡Hola!
Hi! Before anything else in this post, I want to thank you all your good wishes, prayers and vibes. I'm sure they have helped.

Everything went fine. The surgeon took out the whole thyroid and the right side ganglia. Both the thyroid lyump and three of the ganglia were nasty beasts. My neck is cut from the left side all the way up to the right ear.

I'm home now, trying go get better. I don't want to bore you to tears, so if you are in mood for a longer report, see below. Otherwise, this is what is going on in a nutshell.

Gracias de nuevo.
Thank you again.

***

As you know, I had my surgery on Wednesday at about noon. I went there terribly scared and Iwas treated so nicely, they calmed me down (they also gave me a couple of pills...).
As soon as I got to my room (nicer than home, looked like a hotel room) the nurse came in and made me fill a form, take a shower with some antiseptic. Then he made me wear a head wrap, some paper booties and one of those awful hospital gowns that leave you ass out their for anyone to see.
The surgen came to visit before the surgery. Then the anesthesiologist came too, sat on my bed and talked to me for over an hour.

I was taken to the operating room and they talked to me a bit longer while they prepped me up. They were so gentle, I'm so thankful. Next thing I remember I was being taken out of the OR. On other occasions, the anesthetic made me a bit violent, but this time, I was waving to everybody as if I was some homecoming queen on parade ;-)

The surgery was four and a half hour long, and I was out until the early hours of the morning. On Thursday morning they fed me already (I was surprised by the hospital food... better than home). And had ice cream every day, on doctor's orders (way to go, Doc!)

Fortunately, there were no complications with my vocal cords or with a calcium drop, which where two considerable risks. So I was talking and bothering everybody since they took me out of the OR!

Many friends and family (some of whom live 1,200 kms away) came to visit. I appreciated it so much, they kept me company and made me laugh. Mi brogher, my only immediate family, was the best. He took a week off work and stayed with me almost all the time. He is also taking care of me at home.

On Saturdaty morning they sent me home, although they didn't take out the draining thing I have on my neck. I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow and he will surely take it out, since I'm not dripping any more.

I'm in a bit of pain, and tired, but that's fine, I guess. I had surgery only 5 days ago.

And now... what did I do for fun in the hospital? Oh, come on girls! You must know... I took yarn, needles and pattern. Although I think I was a little overambitious, I started the endpaper mitts. I started alright, but had to tink right up to the ribbing when I came home, LOL

Salud / Health

*****

This is a hard post to write. I was considering for a long time whether to write it or not. As you see, I eventually decided to do it.

This October I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, involving also ganglia on the right side of the neck.

This type of cancer has an excellent prognosis (surgery and radioactive iodine). Anyhow, it is a disease that evokes many fears for me. Both my mother and father died of it. For a long time, I could not even utter this word.

Summing up, the surgery (tomorrow) will take out my thyroid and the ganglia on the right side of the neck. These days, while I'm in the hospital, I'll have no internet access. With some luck and God's help, I'll be back in a few more days and my life will go on, with some changes but basically normal.

See you soon.

Quién me ayuda?

This being the first time I've knitted using ribbon, I wonder how to sew this. Thread and needle, taking up the ribbon? Using the same ribbón? How? Help please?

Bolero blanco / White bolero

Here you can see a process picture of a bolero I'm knitting. I'm using a wide white ribbon I got on sale in Nube. In this picture you can see a close up of the stitches. It's just stockinette on 14mm needles.

I'm 15 cms to the end. Then some sewing. I hope it looks nice.
I've never worn a bolero, I've always thought they looked better on teenagers or really young women. But recently bought a sleevles summer shirt for work, but it's somewhat cold in here. So maybe this small piece will cover my arms and back and I'll loock fancy.
I'm not sure you can see it in the pic, but the thing is a bit... kind of glowing. I'ts ok for a bolero, but if you were to knit something bigger, I think it would be appropriate for a wedding thing.
Another thing, I thought that knitting with such enormous needles would be a piece of cake but, to tell the truth, I'm finding them a bit clumsy.

Cardi brilloso de verano / Shiny summer cardi

Les muestro lo último que empecé. Let me show you my latest project.

I used this yarn. It has a light brown background, some white thread and a gold mettalic thread all around.

It's a very fine thread, and I'm knitting it with 6mm needles. It results in an open, airy mesh which has a nice drape to it.

¡Vamos a ver qué sale!
I'm trying to knit a cardigan with ruffles on the chest area. No buttons, just someting to tie it below the breast area. Let's what comes out!

Hemolck Ring Blanket

Here is my blanket, all finished and already in use. The poor model was trying to cope with the season's heat by way of a cold glass of wine... until here I came and threw a blanket at him so I could take a picture.

Especificaciones / Details:
Material: 400 gr lana marca Yanabey / 400 gr pure wool, Yanabey brand.
You can't see it in the pics, but the wool is subtly variegated, as if it was kettle dyed, and that adds a certain interest to the piece.
Agujas / Needles: 5 mm circulares

/ I changed the last row, and was one repeat short (5 rows)
I also changed the decrease on the center of the leaves part: I used a central double decrease, just cause I like it better.

Tamaño terminado post bloqueado
/ Size after blocking: 1 m diametro
Personal opinion on this article: it's big enought to cover yourself when watching TV on the couch, or maybe to cover you fees, but not much more. It's very, very easy to do, and a fast knit to. You finish before you get bored of it.
I'm not sure I'd knit another one, but if you feel like trying, I recomed it.

Tejedora y desobediente / Bad, bad knitter

Bueno, ehhhh. ¡No pude cumplir con ustedes!
Remember how I asked you here what project to finish first? Well, I... I... I couldn't make it!

Justificaciones (excusas?):
No sé cómo. No puedo explicarlo... Volví a tejer ambas mangas y ahora me falta una! No sé dónde más buscar!!!
Reasons (aka sad excuses for the blog)
Wedgette: Half way through and I discover, not without horror, that I don't have enough yarn.
Hey Teach: I lost a sleeve. Don't know how, can't explain... I reknitted both sleeves and now I'm missing one! I don't know where else to look!

So, as I cannot even think of deprive you of some knitting to see in this blog (the lengths I go to for you!) I began (and finished) this (you can thank me later):

You know what it is, right? I began on Wednesday, finished on Sunday. The picture above was taken right after coming off the needles. It'ts blocking right now, held to my bed with a million pins, and looking like this.

When it gets up from bed, I'll let you know what I think of it.

¿Cómo paso esto? / WTF?

I promise, I tell, it's true, I did not kill it! For real, this is no less than some fantasy ribbon (fake fur, mostly, but typing that makes me gag a little). This is a lot of small black and white lumps, supported by the longest white acrylic lashes.
Honest, I went in there to buy some ribbon to knit a small bolero shrug.
Now, what happened in between... How is it possible I went from this bolero idea to the crappy fake fur (hold on, nausea), I cannot fathom.
How did it come to happen that I bought the fake eyelashes Kink Kong wears in drag on every gay parade?
I think I may need medication... Or an intervention. It's clear I cannot longer be trusted alone in a yarn shop. SOMEBODY PLEASE COME RESTRAIN ME!

Childhood modelado / Childhood modelled

I never showed you how the childhood vest looks on my little niece, so here are a couple of pics. Honest, I love how it turned out.

La voz del pueblo / The People has talked

Thank you for playing with me as I asked you on the previous post!

As you have told me, we have a tie in the first position:

Hey Teach: 2 votos/2 votes
Wedgette: 2 votos / 2 votes

Hmmmmm, decido yo?
What to do? My call?

Thursday 16 October 2008

Llamado a la solidaridad / Wanna practice some voting?

As you know, this last month has been hard on me, including a virtual hiatus on my knitting.

Yesterday I was contemplating all the half knitted stuff, and I cannot decide where to start...

So I'm going to ask you to vote, and help me decide what to do first. I promise I'll hear what you say and finish the item you chose!

Vamos con la lista:
So, let's see my list:

1. Wedgette

To be done using this great cotton silk yarn(knitty from Milana) and 3.5 mm needles. I have knitted half the skirt.

2. Hey Teach

I've introduced it to you in this post. I need to finish the upper part of both sleeves and sew it up.

My summer lace sampler. There is about 30% of the border to go. Plus blocking, of course.

Pueden verlo acá
You can also see it here

4. Clapotis

Diría que tengo hecho un 70%
About 70% done

5. Medias tejidas con esta lana:
Socks for me in this yarn:

(¡1 media y media!)
(one and a half sock done already)

¿Qué me dicen?
So what do you say? Where do I start? I'm itching to cast on a new thing, but I've promised myself I'll finish some of this stuff first.

After some off time, I'm back to tell you I had to be away from the blogging world since I had to keep to home for almost two weeks. And as you can imagine, it had to happen: no internet service. Broad band? No-band, rather.

So, here's a photo-less post. Dial-up is a bitch.

I want to thank you guys for answering my questions about the Hey Teach sleeves.
I decided to sew them anyway, and to assume no one was going to watch that closely. I sew them up ever so carefully, they stayed on rather prettily. I try the whole thing on and... errrr. What to say. I can put it on, that's true. But my arms look like some pretty wrapped salami. The horror! I'm at least two cm short of a comfortable fit. Or maybe 3 cm, if I'm going to wear anything other than a bra beneath this cardi.

Caramba...
So I had to rip the sewing (the pain!) and tink the sleeves. And I'm now reknitting a wider sleeve. Let's see what else I manage to foul up before finishing, particularly since the pattern instructions are useless now that I have this many stitches on. So I'm going to have to do some math. That's going to be interesting...

I'll come up with an update in a few days. Or I'll never mention this again, I may quit knitting this thing.

Denme una opinión / You opinion, please

Amig@s,

I'm posting here a couple of photos showing the error in my sleeves for the Hey Teach

In this first picture, you can see where I circled in yellow, that the lace ends right up the sleeve.

Here, however, you can see that the yellow part I finished the lace before the ending, so there are a few rows of stockinette right ther.

¿Destejo o dejo?
Shoud I knit or tink?

Estuve haciendo / I've been knitting

este cardi: Hey Teach
this cardi: Hey Teach

I'm this close to finishing, I just need to saw it up and do the button bands. And only now do I realize that the sleeves are slightly... well, different (I kind of suspected this while knitting, but I couldn't stop)

What is to be done when you reach the end of a garment and you discover all the glorious differences between both sleeves? Uh?
Are you all tidy and unravel, or do you do as I do and close your eyes? Anyway... nobody is going to notice... anyway it's just a little bit... anyway, who is going to look that closely to my shoulder joints to compare left and right?

¿Que hace mis querdísimas tejedoras? Seguro que ustedes destejen... ay!
Who do you do, my dear knitting people? I bet you unravel... ouch!

Mujeres desesperadas / Desperate women

Some time ago I started reading blogs written by fellow women. There's a bit of everything out there. There are women who share a particular interest of theirs, there are those who share their thoughts, their life events. There are married, single, divorced women. There are mothers and daughters. Housewifes and women who work outside the house. Young and middle-aged.

Many of those blogs I find interesting. Others do not resonate with me. Which is alright for me and for them too.

But the thing I have been noticing lately is the appearance of so many angry women. Agressive, quarrling, shouting women. And I wonder what is going on with them. Are they really that angry? Or maybe it's the blogging world itself that lets us vent and deal with the frustration we cannot deal with in our daily lives. I'm a bit amazed after reading so many inflammatory posts telling us that someone ate their yogurt, that they hate diet coke, or a neighbour is being noisy.
Is this just some neurotic shouting into the void? Or is this some kind of outlet for the desperate women oppressed by the patriarchal society that won't let them express their anger in real life?

Caveat emperor:
Sólo me hacen pensar.
I'm not advocating that they shut up in any way, or that they write to suit my tastes. I just find it thought provoking.

Ultimas secciones del shawl / SLS, last sections

Hola,

Les estaba debiendo un update del chaleterno:
I still owe you an update on the lace sampler:

Here are a few shots of the last sections:

Quite hard, it was an introduction to Estonian lace (look at the 7 stitches knupps. Who would have thought I could do that?)

Esta sección fue fácil y zzzzzzzzzz aburrida.
This was an easy and extremely boooooring section.

I like this one. Kind of a fish tail, right?

Y el borde...
Now for the border...

Creo haberles dicho que lo detesto? Uffffff
I think I already told you how I'm hating this border.

Alfarería / Some pottery

Hola gente linda,
Hi there, you beautiful people

Thank you so much for your messages and ecouragment. I really couldn't knit during this horror week I had, but I was able to go to my pottery workshop. I don't know what I would do if I were unable to sink my hands into the mud every so often. I realize how knitting oriented this blog is, yarn is so much more immediate and available to me.

Here are some coffe cups I made some time ago:

Primavera / Spring

Y llegó nomás!
It's here eventually.

I don't really enjoy spring because I can no longer wear sweaters, scarves, gloves, cardigans, etc.

Pero me gusta por esto:
But I kind of like this:

Feliz primavera!
Have a nice springtime!

Hola Hola Hola Hola

Long time no see, uh?
Without getting into that much detail, I was quite sick, had to call in an ambulance on Saturday, I had to get some mandatory rest, I'm not well yet, but I'm around and kicking. Our usual stuff will be coming up soon.

¿Vamos todas?

I'm passing along this info for the next knitters/bloggers meeting in Buenos Aires. For the locals and any travelers that might be around. Let's all go!

Me entrego / I surrender

How unoriginal of me! I could not resist any longer... so here it is. Most of you won't need me to tell you what it is. To my non knitting readers: this is (or, hopefully, will be) a Clapotis.

Me gustan muchísimo los colores.
I'm seriously loving these colors.

Gatito o langostino? / Shrimp neck warmer?

This is the smailsh neck warmer I knitted using "Langostino".

Saqué las instrucciones de este sitio / I used a pattern from this site (in Spanish).

Quite useful, since the double rib knitted near the ends make this stay put all by itself and you don't need to keep adjusting it continously like a regular scarf.

I'm rediscovering the wonder of the simple, humble garter stich. Behold all these wonderful, slick little bumps:

And here is the unfailing model shot (I think the Pancho model pics are the only reason I keep knitting this kind of thing).

Qué manguita peculiar / What a strange looking sleeve

This is the black merino sweater I'm knitting full force in order to try and finish before the summer comes along. I'd like to wear it at least once this year. Also, it was one of my entries for the Ravelry UFOlympics.

I was happy, I was plodding along and finished the knitting part. I sewed up the shoulders. I attached one sleeve... there was a lot of fabric there... what is all this rouching on the sleeve cap?

¿Qué es esta porquería de manga princesa?
What is this awful sleeve doing here?

I'm showing you a pic cause I feel I cannot deprive you of such an enormous mistake. LOL. I have to frog at least five cms of each sleeve cap. Oh well, I didn't make it for the olympics, but it is almost finished.
Who do I have to get in touch with to delay summer a little bit?

El botín / The treasure

La última compra que hice. No se ve impresionante, así toda junta?
My latest foraging into the yarn stores. Ain't it impressive?

Clockwise, from the upper left corner: brown Amancay (50% wook, 50% acrylic), mint Amancay menta, more brown Amancay, Berocco suede, Berocco paper, Lanagrossa Teamcolor Holland, rustic cotton, Lanagrossa Teamcolor Great Britain, Lanagrossa Teamcolor Argentina, Silk/cotton blend Knitty.
Enjoy the fumes with me, I'm not stashing any more for some time.
So that you know why I'm saying this: when you go into a yarn shop and the owner greets you, remembers you as customer, gives you the opportunity to complain about a yarn you bought before and turned out being poor quality and proceeds to offer you a rather nice discount, and then gives you their business card... I don't know, seems to me I'm buying more than what I'm actually knitting (I was also offered a business card at the notions store, I'm freaking out a bit, please bear with me!)
