Volvi / I'm back

Short post today, I'm home already. Even my hair seems to hurt a bit, but considering I had my surgery only yesterday, I think a little pain is to be expected. It was a rather complicated surgery because I was in worst condition than expected, more than 3 hours under. (What did you expect of me, something easy? Oh no...)

Thank you for your messages!

Cerrado por cirugía / Closed for surgery

QueridaVesícula mía,

He recibido tus memos internos.

Dear gallbladder of mine,

I have received your (so loud) internal memos. As I understand it, you are tired of working. You are no longer what you used to be and your job weights on you like a sack of stones (no pun intended).
After so many years together, we go our separate ways today.
Thanks for all these years together.

Dear friends, as you can see, these days I'm having more surgeries than a Playboy girl. If you want more gallbladder info, see here.
If all goes well, it's going to be a laparoscopic surgery and I will be released back into the wild tomorow. The same team that took care of my thyroid will be doing my surgery. Apparently, they cannot get enough of me...
So if you want to send prayers and good vibes my way, they will be very appreciated.
See you soon, folks.

See what I'm knitting for myself:

Se supone que va a lucir así:
It's supposed to end up looking like this:

Hmmm, ya veremos!
We'll have to wait and see.
In my crazy little head (which for some time now I've been forcing on you, my dear readers), I've called it Women's Day Linear because I started it in March 8th, and because it's purple, the feminists chosen color (to tell you the truth, it's purple because it's one of my favorite colors, but I also like the association)

I knit this small neckwarmer. It's cotton, so it should be good for the first days of fall. I love the colors, and the fact that I finished it in one afternoon, with only 50 grs of yarn.

It's quite short, and it buttons up at the back of the neck. I used two wood buttons.

Un acercamiento. El hilado es Multicot Print de Lanagrossa.
A close up. The yarn is Multicot Print from Lanagrossa

El ataque de la lana / Wool attack

Una más.
One more hank

I used the Colibry dye brand again: bright green, solferino and a mixt ure of purple and navy blue. It looks as if I used very little dye, cause the colores came out really soft. Also, it looks as if there were 4 colors, when I only used three (purple and blue were mixed together, so it was actually one dye bath). This happened because the undyed wet wook absorbed part of the color from the section that was under the color bath. It was an accidental result, but I quite liked it.

Esta madeja, es prima de la verde. ¿Ven lo bien que se llevan?
This hank and the green one are cousins. See how they get along?

¿Opiniones?
This hank makes me think of the 70s, remember the batik era? What do you think?

Lana, agujas, libro / Wool, needles, book

Several days ago, a friend travelled from the States and brought me a few things I had bought and some others she gifted to me, just because that's how lovely she is.

I had ordered some Fleece Artist sea wool, in the Stone coloway:

Calumnias!!!!)
It is a blend of merino wool and seacell. I don't know if it's true that you skin will absorb the minerals existing in the seacell, but the wool is so soft you feel like stroking it against your face (eh, no... what? No, I've NEVERdone that. What do you mean there are pictures? What? Scandal! Libel!)

I also ordered some Noro Silk Garden Sock. I love the saturated colors, even though the wool is a bit rough despite the silk content.

I also had her bring some Knitpicks needles (in the picture below you can see a mix of DPNs, circulars and pointers):

Y además recibí estos regalitos:
And I got these presents from her:

I love this little box where I can carry the big tapestry needles, and I also love the curved needles themselves. If this makes a dent in my visceral loath of sewing my knits... it'll be a miracle.
As a side note, only later did I find that there is a knitting fetish about the pink Chibis. Go figure...

And finally, she gave me this wonderful book:

¡Cuánto me gusta!
Oh, how I love it! I'm so entertained by knitting lace! The photos in this book are well done and clear, you can appreciate the details of every knit, the graphics are clear, there are explanations and stories behind each shawl. Awsome book.

I'm utterly satisfied, I have knitting material for quite some time.

¡Gracias amiga!
Thank you friend!

Felicidades / Greetings

This blog takes on a rather personal note today.

I want to wish all the happiness in the world to a person that I love the more every day. A person who, even though riddled with defects and ambiguities, has been with me for ever, every day of my life.
A person who, despite the many years on this planet, is only just beginning to enjoy the ride.
A person I almost lost last year.

¡Feliz cumpleaños a MI!
Happy birthday to ME!

Ovejas de la guarda / Guardian Sheep

Los hechos: /The facts:

Fact 1: I live in uber urban Buenos Aires downtown, in an apartment that comfortably accomodates two people and a dog. But sheep... not really.

Fact 2: I discovered yesterday that my llama wool has become a breeding spot for those nasty, nasty, awfully nasty moths.

Fact 3: Mi guardian angel entertained enough by my own problems, go figure if she (he?) is going to take care of the stash too.

La consecuencia: / The outcome:

I don't know what I like the most: their ears:

O su colitas / Or their tiny tails:

I bought them in Gessel, but they took some time to photograph (getting them to pose their tails for me was quite some hard negotiation)

Last Saturday 21 we knitters met at Joji's house. Many of us knew each other only by mail, so the meeting was a double pleasure.

Most of us are in this first photo (AndreaB and her mum Inés are missing), photographed by "Papi". Kudos for the poor gentleman who took care of his (and Joji's boys)!

Down here I post individual pictures of us, receiving the little presents we gave each other.

Here we have Queen Joji, just about to start the ruffle. There alre also PulpoGris, IndiaLucía and Gringa de Quilmes

And ClaudiaB with her new yarn balls, matching her T-shirt. (Titina and AndreaB sure look interested in somthing back there, uh?

Gringa de Quilmes, with the much desired knitted bag (Gabriela, please, let go o mam's purse!)

And we follow with Billy and her new hanks in shades of blue.

Bien hecho Maca!
Macarena the traveller, with her ping yarn (can you believe this knitter flew from the USA that asme morning, left her luggage at the hotel and came straight to the meeting?) Way to go, girl!

And here I am, myself, with those brand new yarn balls ready to be added to my stash.
As you can see, I follow the number one rule of picture taking to a tee: close your eyes right when the picture is being taken...

And here we have Billy again, getting the handyed yarn Joji gifted to her, since the girl is going away for her honeymoon (do you think she is going to knit much?).

Pasamos una tarde inmejorable.
We spent a wonderful afternoon together.

Ah, but you wouldn't think that chatting, knitting, eating and eyeing each other magazines was all we did, right? This is a ver focused grup. We had some crochet classes too:

Ciro

Fall always reminds me of Dad

This has always been my favorite season. I derive a huge pleasure from stepping the dry, fallen autumm leaves. I don't know why, just because.

Several years ago I had this job with very long hours. One day, in casual conversation, I told my dad how long it had been since I had stepped on an autumm leaf.

When I came home that night, dad had collected some leaves, and had brought them home for me.
Such was my dear old man.

Himself, though, much favored rainy days, and stepping in shalow city puddles.

I hope someone is now setting up a few puddles for him to step in.

Here is another hank I dyed.

It looks so different in the ball. Misteries of dyeing.

This hank was dyed without using any vinegar, with Colibrí dye in the following colors: bright green, purple and navy blue.

It took the longest time, since every color was done separately. I invested more than an hour in each color bath, plus rinsing and "logistics" (I used the same set-up as before, but his time in the tub. Side note: this dye stains can be removed with leach)

The hardest parts were avoiding the colores to blend too much, and calculating the right proportion of dye and water to obtained the desired intensity (see how the purple turned out magenta?).

In my opinion, it is reminiscent of a winter garden. Deep green for the folliage, blue and magenta for the some flowers. But it's not a sunny summer garden, it feels more like a cold one, maybe at dawn. What do you think?

Shhhh, tengo más ovillos. Estoy exprimiendo el tema, eh?
Psst, I have more hanks. I'm really milking it, uh?

This last weekend, I went to Villa Gesell (a beachside town 400 km from home). Since I couldn't take my holidays this year, I decided to take the last weekend of summer 2009.

The weather was not too nice, so I didn't go to the beach, but it was such a relaxing weekend, I had a great time altogether.

I did think of you, so I took a few shots to show you.

Asi es como viajo en auto:
This is how I usually travel by car:

Why am I showing you this? Well... look between my feet: basket, thermus, mate, and... what is that reddish thing?

Es esto:
It is this:

Linda, no?
The socks I took to knit along the way and whenever, actually. Nice, right?

¡Cómo me gusta usar mis tejidos!
As I was telling you, the weather was less than nice. Luckily, I had packed my Summer Lace Sample. It't the first time I wear it, since I finished it when summer was just starting. I love wearing my knits!

I finished reading this book some time ago. In case you are planning to read it, I think it is interesting how the author presents a possible way to reorgnize a post apocaliptic society, particularly as regards gender roles. The story is entertaining and there's a nice twist at the end of it.

Más lana teñida / More dyed wool

¡Otra madeja!
Another hank!

This was was done using the same procedure than before, only differences were no vinegar, and that it was done in my tub.

Suave degradé de verdes. ¿Les gusta?

Uso / Wear

Funny the fate of my knitting. Remember the cardigan I showed you in the latest post? Since I finished, I've already worn it several times, and I suspect I'm going to wear it in many other opportunities. It fits, the color is nice on me, it's well knitted and comfortable.

Resultó ser una experiencia exitosa.
Quite a successful experience.

The same thing happened to my fingerless mitts

y con estas medias:
and these socks:

Most of my knitting, however, do not often see the light of day. All my shawls share this fate, but some sweaters too.

I find this particularly annoying, some things I knit I never wear because they don't fit right, or because there are few chances for me to wear them.

¿Les pasa esto a ustedes?
Does this happen to you too?

Cardigan Magenta

¡Tarán!

¡Acatá! Ter-mi-na-do. Mi primer top down, en circulares.

So here it is. Finished! Mi first top down in circular needles. Ow, what a pleasure not having to sew a single stitch! How comes in so many years of knitting I had never tried this technique?

I'm particularly proud of the shaping: biggie on top, smaller at the waist, way bigger at the hip, you know.

What I would not do again is highlighting the sides like this. I thought it would be decorative, but now I don't like it. It's just a detail though, doesn't affect the overall satisfaction level.

Nada mal, no?
Also, besides learning how to knit top down, I decided to knit the sleeves in the round too, so I had to use the magic loop thing. I was not happy about it, every time I tried it in the past I ended up abandoning the technique, I found it terribly difficult and hard. So I stared on sleeve and after a few rounds I started shifting the needle position and the knitting, I realized that it's always been hard because... I've been doing it wrong! That's how I learn, by doing.
So I learnt two things from this cardi. Not bad, uh?

I don't know what do you think, me dear audience. I quite like it.

GRRR
Side note: don't you sometimes find the non knitters opinions are a bit different than ours? As I was trying this on, a friend saw me and offered his opinion: "This is to go around the house, right? Sic. The sad thing is that he was not just kidding me, he was trying to be helpful. At my look of bewilderment, he felt compelled to elaborate: "no, it's all right, it's just that it looks like something that people would use in the country... like for milking goats or something, I don't know...". So there. Somebody please explain how does this city slicker know what a person would wear to milk goats... in a cotton/silk/lurex cardigan no less... GRRR

Las dejo porque tengo algo que hacer:
I'm off now to do this:

Saturday 7 March 2009
